While I work hard to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information at the time of publishing, as time passes some information may no longer be relevant or accurate. The field of medicine is a constantly evolving science and art. Thankfully! In 1951 a woman was given a lobotomy to treat her ulcerative colitis. That wasn't even that long ago!
Why Are You So Exhausted?
Fatigue is one of the most reported symptoms of people living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Fatigue is not the same thing as being tired. When you are tired you can take a nap or get some extra sleep and the problem resolves. When you have fatigue no amount of naps or extra rest seems to help.
You feel drained of energy and doing simple tasks can take almost everything out of you.

Below are some things that can cause or contribute to fatigue in people who have Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
- Steroids can cause insomnia and abnormal sleep patterns
- Other medications may cause drowsiness, insomnia, or fatigue
- Frequent trips to the bathroom that interrupt sleep
- Night sweats
- Pain
- Anemia
- Deconditioning
- Poor mental health
- Malnourishment
- Your body is fighting an internal battle which uses extra energy and can cause fatigue.
